In the aftermath of a major disaster, emergency services may be delayed or overwhelmed due to communication breakdowns, road closures, or the sheer number of people in need. That’s why community preparedness is essential.
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program equips volunteer residents of Passaic County with the training and tools needed to help their families, neighbors, and communities in the critical moments before professional responders arrive.
Launched in the wake of September 11, CERT is part of a national initiative to foster community resilience and preparedness. The Passaic County Sheriff's Office proudly offers CERT training that focuses on life-saving skills, safety, and teamwork, enabling volunteers to act with confidence during a crisis.
CERT Training Covers:
- Basic disaster response skills
- Fire safety and light search and rescue
- Medical triage and basic first aid
- Traffic control and scene safety
- Rescuer protection and incident decision-making
CERT members serve as a vital extension of our first responder network. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Passaic County CERT volunteers played a key role in directing traffic at testing sites and supporting public safety operations. Members also receive annual training in traffic management and crossing guard safety to remain ready for a wide range of situations.
