The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2003, established national standards aimed at preventing, detecting, and responding to incidents of sexual abuse within correctional facilities.

The Passaic County Sheriff's Office is committed to maintaining a zero-tolerance policy toward sexual assault and sexual harassment in any form. We take all allegations of sexual abuse or harassment seriously and investigate them thoroughly. Offenders found responsible are subject to disciplinary action, including criminal prosecution.

To ensure a safe and respectful environment, all staff, volunteers, and contractors undergo mandatory PREA training. This training emphasizes their duty to report any incidents or allegations of sexual abuse or harassment promptly and appropriately.

We work tirelessly to stay compliant with PREA standards and protect those under our care through ongoing education, awareness, and a firm commitment to maintaining policies that safeguard all individuals in our custody.
