The K9 Unit of the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office is a highly trained and specialized team that supports law enforcement operations through the unique skills of police service dogs and their handlers. As an assisting agency, the K9 Unit partners with municipal, state, and federal law enforcement agencies as well as other emergency services across Passaic County to enhance public safety, strengthen tactical response, and aid in criminal investigations.

Each K9 team undergoes extensive training and certification in specific disciplines such as narcotics detection, explosives detection, tracking, article searches, search and rescue, and patrol apprehension. These dogs are invaluable assets in both urban and rural environments, providing capabilities that go beyond human limitations.

Key functions of the K9 Unit include:

  • Narcotics Detection: Locating illegal drugs in vehicles, buildings, and open areas
  • Explosives Detection: Assisting with bomb threats and securing public venues and events
  • Tracking and Searches: Locating missing persons, fleeing suspects, or evidence
  • Criminal Apprehension: Assisting in the safe apprehension of suspects during high-risk operations
  • Search and Rescue: Locating missing and endangered persons
  • Public Demonstrations: Engaging with the community through K9 demonstrations and outreach programs

The presence of a K9 team not only enhances officer safety but also serves as a deterrent to criminal activity. Beyond their law enforcement role, K9 teams are proud ambassadors of the Sheriff’s Office, participating in school visits, community events, and safety education initiatives.
